Wyoming Expands Gun Rights: Concealed Carry Now Allowed in Schools, Government Meetings, and More
Effective July 1, 2025, Wyoming is taking a major step forward in restoring the Second Amendment rights of its citizens. A significant revision to W.S. 6‑8‑104 repeals most gun‑free zones and opens several previously off‑limits locations to legal concealed carry. Here’s what every armed citizen in the Cowboy State needs to know.
Having been born and raised in Wyoming, I couldn’t be prouder of these changes. This is my home state stepping up to defend the rights of everyday, law‑abiding citizens—and it feels incredible.

🔫 Concealed Carry Now Legal on School Property (With a Permit)
The headline change: Permit holders can now legally carry concealed handguns on school property and in school buildings. This restores a fundamental right that once ended at the school gate, while still maintaining permit requirements to ensure responsibility. This version of campus carry feels very similar to neighboring Utah and now South Dakota which joined the campus carry train this year also.
🏛️ Expanded Carry Rights: With or Without a Permit
Starting July 1, even those without a permit, carrying under the permitless carry authority, can carry concealed in several key public settings:
- Meetings of governmental bodies (like city councils or county commissioners)
- Meetings of the state legislature or legislative committees
- Public airports, in areas not restricted under federal law or TSA rules
- Most public buildings, except those specifically excluded under W.S. 6‑8‑104(t) or other regulations
🏛️ What Happened with the Governor’s Veto?
Here’s what the legislative process really looked like:
- Earlier this year, Gov. Mark Gordon publicly declined to sign House Bill 172 repealing gun‑free zones, calling it an overreach that infringed on local control. Ultimately, he wasn’t opposed to these measures in concept but wanted local school districts and boards to maintain some control.
- However, the Wyoming Legislature had enough votes to override his veto, and HB 172 took effect without the governor’s signature.
- That override cleared the way for the sweeping changes: school campuses (including UW and community colleges), public meetings, airports, and public buildings are now open to concealed carry under the updated law.
With Wyoming solidifying its status as one of the most pro‑gun states in the nation, armed citizens now have a clearer—and stronger—path to exercising their rights responsibly.
